The Science of Music

science of musicMusic is a truly amazing thing. Anyone can enjoy music, no matter who they are, how old they are, or whatever their personality might be. In addition, anyone can listen to any type of music, whether it’s jazz, hip-hop, classical, and more. But what goes on in the brain when people are listening to music, or even practicing an instrument? What makes people so excited when they listen to music? Music is an important part of our lives and it can helps everyone in more ways than people usually believe.

There is not just one part of the brain that is designated for music. Music puts several parts of the brain to work. The frontal lobe (the part that processes one’s decision making ability, emotions, problem solving, etc.) and the temporal lobe (the part that processes emotions, hearing, memory) both work together to process a sound, while other parts of the body are processing pitch, rhythm, and melody. If the song has words, the part of the human brain that processes language is also at work. People might even

Transmit Your Passion for Music Across the Globe

As said by Victor Hugo, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”. It’s true that music transcends race, caste, boundaries or any other dimensions that exist. Like every other art form, you can’t just express them in words but to put a precise meaning to it, music is any art form whose medium is sound.

It’s not that it is a relatively new concept at all as music has been there for hundreds of centuries. Yes, several aspects of it have undergone some rapid development over the years, and now the basic concept of music has been widely elaborated. There are certain elements of music which are :

• Pitch

Common Mistakes When Choosing Acoustic Guitars

By playing musical instruments, you can hone your musical skills, which can help open new opportunities. And, playing instruments can also help you unwind and relax.

As of now, there are numerous musical instruments individuals can choose from. However, one of the most popular instruments played by individuals is acoustic guitars. Because of this, finding acoustic guitars in the market is an easy task. Unfortunately choosing the right acoustic guitar is another story. The task of purchasing can get even worse in case individuals make the wrong decisions in choosing guitars. To help individuals avoid these issues, below are some of the most common mistakes in choosing acoustic guitars.

Not knowing the right type of acoustics

One of the most common mistakes individuals make when buying acoustics is opting for the wrong type of acoustics. When it comes to acoustics, there are numerous options you can choose from such as classical guitar, steel-string acoustic guitar, and lap steel guitar. These types of guitars offer unique features. Therefore,

Using Different Guitar Picks To Get Interesting Tone

Contrary to what many guitarists think, your guitar tone doesn’t just come from the guitar you play on or your fingers. A huge factor that you should be paying attention to is the specific type of pick you use. There are all different kinds to choose from and the one you choose will have a drastic effect on the sound of your playing.

Note: The thickness of your pick (in addition to the type) contributes a lot to your tone. It is common for acoustic guitarists to use thinner picks to get a lighter, delicate sound. If you play rock or metal, you might be more interested in a thicker pick that will give you a heavier tone.

Here are various types of picks you can choose from:

Celluloid – This is the most common pick material that nearly all picks you come across are made of. These types of picks are very cheap, and provide a generally balanced tone. Compared to other picks, these types degenerate much faster.

Wood – These picks have a very earthy type tone to them and a distinctly unique grip to them when you hold them between your fingers. Get started with rosewood and ebony, before looking into

How To Play With Better Metal Rhythm Guitar Technique

Want to know how to play with awesome rhythm guitar technique? Stop trying to “learn random guitar riffs to play” and get started learning how to make ANY guitar riff sound totally killer. Remember, it’s not WHAT you play – it’s how you play it!

Here are five key things you must work on to become a great rhythm guitar player:

1. Use A Strong Pick Attack In Your Guitar Playing

Many guitar players do not use much picking hand power when playing rhythm guitar. This generally occurs when you want to play with speed and your picking hand starts sacrificing power for speed (this makes your playing sound very weak). The best way to play with speed and power (without losing stamina) is to strike the strings hard and then immediately relax the tension after playing each particular note or chord.

2. Learn The Most Effective Way To Separate Your Picking Hand From Your Fretting Hand

One of the worst guitar mistakes is to let your fretting hand become very tense as your picking hand plays faster (and/or with more articulation and power). This will make you get tired a lot faster and makes playing guitar harder than it needs to be.

Which Acoustic Guitar Amplifier Is the Best?

After years and years of jamming out on a regular guitar amp with the gain amped up and multiple pedal effects going on at once the noise can start to go to your head. These are the times that I’m glad I have an acoustic guitar amp to plug into and just relax a little.

My personal favorite is the Fender Acoustasonic. The Acoustasonic comes in 15 watt, 90 watt and 150 watt versions, I personally have the 150 watt one, and it just produces one of the most clean sounds I have ever heard. It even has a few very nice features that I have not seen on many other guitar amps. Not only does it have a the normal channel for your guitar but it also has a second channel available for a microphone so you can simultaneously do guitar and vocals.

On top of all of this it just looks amazing. Fender just nailed the vintage look with this acoustic guitar amplifier. Even though it is on the more expensive side, I would definitely suggest this amp to any avid guitar player looking for a cleaner guitar amp. Another acoustic guitar amplifier that

8 Tips on How to Make Vocals in Music Recordings Sound Professional

music recordingFirst things first

Every voice is different. Settings that help the voice of the top-selling artist to be at the top of the charts, might do nothing to help your voice. In fact, such settings might even harm it. Keep that in mind as you read advices regarding frequency numbers, etc.

Your voice is unique. And what is unique, has to be treated as such. That’s why opinions about microphones vary so much. I will say this though – the better the vocal recordings, the easier it is to mix them properly.

1. Equipment

Let’s say you take a picture of a sunset over Paris with an old, two megapixel camera. It’s going to be a great picture nonetheless. But if you try to make a poster out of it, you’ll end up with a blurry, pixelated mess. What the pixels and camera quality are to your eyes, bits and studio equipment are to your ears.

Expensive, high end studio equipment can indeed give you a sense of what makes it expensive,

The Right Guitar Tuner For You

There are so many different guitar tuners out there that it can be hard at times to know which one you should choose. We have all been there when you need a new tuner so you start doing some research on the best guitar tuners and you end up with pages upon pages of results. It may all seem intimidating at first but am going to give you a few of my favorite all time best guitar tuners. Hopefully using this list you can find one that you really like.

My all time favorite has to be the Korg GA-40, I have had this tuner since I first started playing guitar almost 13 years ago. I still have the same exact one and it has yet to die on me. I can not think of anything else that is as reliable as the Korg. Not only is it reliable but the quality of the tuning is almost perfect. The Korg GA-20 even allows for drop tuning which I highly appreciate because I enjoy playing the heavier metal and rock songs. If you can not decide on as guitar tuner, the Korg GA-20 is no doubt one of

Writing Melody

The melody or tune of a song is what most people hear when listening to music, the chords, drums, bass are very important in supporting the melody but the average person hears the tune. The best melodies are simple, easy to remember and easy to sing along with. However the goal of good melody writing is to make the tune simple but not boring or run of the mill. We will discuss how to write a melody, explain a bit of music theory

(I promise not too much!) behind constructing a tune and how to fit lyrics to melody.

The most common question I receive from ‘non-‘musicians’ is what do you write first, music or words? I like to do both and I would recommend you try both ways. If I’m writing with a collaborator who writes lyrics I would always write the tune to fit the lyrics. Sometimes if you have a chord sequence composing lyrics and melody at the same time is a good way to go. Even a combination of the two will work, remember there’s no hard rules to this. The melody is normally the primary reason a song gets

Playing the Guitar – How to Play Fast

Learning to play something new on the guitar, whether it is slow or fast, involves teaching your brain to move your fingers in some new way. The goal is to teach your brain to be able to play this new piece without you having to think about it. This is a very important point. But before we start, if the passage you want to learn is long, you need to break it up into pieces that are relatively short. A passage can almost always be split up into shorter pieces. You learn each piece individually, and string them all together in the end.

So how do you train your brain to play something ‘automatically’? In order to achieve this, you start slow. You slow way down. Be sure to tap your foot or use a metronome to keep the beat. You need to make a point to keep the beat and play the piece in time, because if you don’t, your brain will get accustomed to playing it that way and you have just wasted a lot of effort.

Slow down and play it.

If you make a mistake, stop, and play the piece from

What To Consider When Purchasing A Six String Guitar

Whether or not it’s your first guitar, your tenth, or your hundredth, acquiring a guitar is certainly a super fun and stimulating time. To ensure that you are determining the best guitar-shopping decisions, take into account these things before purchasing your next guitar.

Purchasing a six string guitar?

This is a vital question you have to ask yourself. Suppose you already own a guitar, yet you are not using it, bear in mind the reason why. This will let you know exactly what to keep away from when shopping for a guitar. Meditate with your previous guitar and figure out why you think it’s mandatory for you to go shopping for this particular guitar.

Electric or acoustic?

This is a good in advance question you ought to ask yourself. Would you like to get an electric acoustic six string guitar? In case you are baffled on this one, solicit yourself what kind of music would you prefer to play? In case you are hoping to strum somewhere in the range of classic folk or 90s go for acoustic. In case you are hoping to shred somewhere in the range of 80s old school thrash

The Creative Process for Writing Music

How do you write a song?

Perhaps everyone has a different method or perhaps there’s a rulebook somewhere that states the order in which a song or piece must be written.

I can only speak for myself.

I know I take a different approach for writing songs as opposed to say writing a film score.

Most of my songs all came about by accident, I was just noodling on the guitar and a few chords got stuck together and I liked how they sounded and I started fumbling around with them until I had a riff and a pattern.

Some songs might take months or years to complete, I leave them there to ‘marinate’. In the past I would remember the chord structure, might even record it with a 4-track machine (when I borrowed one) or just play it into my tape deck (remember those days?). But other times I would just play those chords over and over so much till I remembered them. All in my head.

Of course, fast forward to the digital era and everyone and their grandmother has a laptop with some sort of recording capability. So

10 Relaxing Rock Songs

Panic stricken? Dead tired? Extremely anxious? Having difficulty sleeping? Head is swimming? No peace inside? Want an out? Listen to music!

Music is considered to be an essential measure for relaxation. Many therapists use music as treatment. Mostly classical music is the prescribed medicine, but that doesn’t need to be a necessity.

Below are 10 songs by rock bands and artists which have an intensely soothing effect on the nerves and will make you feel at peace.

1. Imagine – John Lennon

Much doesn’t need to be said about what this song does to the listener. Live in Utopia for a while, and you’ll get what is desired by all (and what John philosophized) – peace!

2. Perfect Day – Lou Reed

A lazy, melodious track. It may have been written about heroin, but that doesn’t mean it cannot work wonders for the sane mind. When facing problems or overwhelmed, just slow down. Give it some time and let it go. Escape for a while!

3. Big D’s Touch – Buckethead

One of the most relaxing tunes to come out of Buckethead’s fingers is this instrumental. Let it touch you.
